Holiday Decorations

Welcome to another Trash Talk Tuesday! During this holiday season you can experience wonderful smells, delicious drinks and festive music. I wanted to share a few fun and less waste decorations that can add a cheery ambiance to your home. Creating some of these projects with friends and family can be a great way to build cherished memories. Hope you enjoy some of these ideas!

Garlands: There are many options for making garlands, and they can add a delightful smell to your house. The first option is made from cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange slices. Bake the orange slices on the lowest setting (about 200 degrees) until they are dry, leave them overnight to cool and completely dry. You can push the cloves into the peels of the orange slices in unique patterns. On a string or ribbon put the cinnamon stick and orange slices in a pattern of your choice. Another option is dried cranberries and popcorn. I recommend starting and finishing with a piece of popcorn to make it easier to tie off.

Ornaments: Usually ornaments are put on Christmas trees. But they can be hung anywhere like garlands and wreaths to brighten and personalize a space. You can make applesauce and cinnamon ornaments and create various shapes using cookie cutters. Or you can make salt dough ornaments. I have pushed leaves, berries or patterns onto the cookies and painted them later. Be sure to make a large enough hole at the top to put string or ribbon through once it has baked and cooled. Similar to the garlands you can dry different kinds of citrus to put on the tree. Last but not least, you can buy some clear glass ornaments and various acrylic paints to decorate the inside of the ornaments.

Wreaths: There are never ending options when decorating wreaths. Depending on preferred thickness you can start with a wire hanger or embroidery hoop. If you want the wreath to be a little thicker you can wrap old crinkled newspaper around it until the desired thickness is achieved. Once that is completed you can decorate it with pine cones, feathers, berries, holly, pine sprigs, ribbon, fabric, paper snowflakes, dried citrus and more.
