Spring Cleaning
Though the snow storms loom, the time for spring cleaning is just around the corner, and we’ve got our best spring cleaning tips for natural, inexpensive, and easy ways to clean your home.
We get it. Sometimes a fungus so vile shows up that you have no choice but to bleach. However, for maintenance cleaning, using harsh or even common commercial disinfectants is completely unnecessary and terrible for your lungs and skin, either on immediate contact or through long-term exposure. Take your tub for example. Did you know you can easily make a scrubbing paste from some water and a chemical-free powder cleanser like Bon-Ami? You’d be shocked at how it removes the toughest grime with just a reusable rag and a bit of elbow grease. You can even mix the paste and apply it with an old toothbrush to get stubborn staining out of your grout. This paste can be used on stainless steel, porcelain, enamel, fiberglass, acrylic, and more!
What about disinfecting though? For almost no extra cost, you can successfully make disinfectants from ingredients in your own kitchen (as always though, be mindful of mixing certain ingredients that can create toxic fumes, such as mixing bleach and ammonia, or hydrogen peroxide and vinegar). White vinegar mixed with lemon juice is great for regular cleaning. However, you can also make a very effective disinfecting spray in a reusable spray bottle using rubbing alcohol (remember, use a concentration of 70% or higher to kill germs), a small amount of castile soap, a pinch of baking soda, and hot water. Some essential oils are also naturally antimicrobial, such as lemongrass, orange, eucalyptus, and tea tree oils.
Lastly, don’t be fooled into thinking disposable paper and pads are the only way to get a clean and disinfected surface. We encourage you to try out reusable wet and dry mop pads, dusters, and non-paper towels that can just be thrown in the wash and dried time and time again. Not only are these products just as effective, they are better for the planet and much less expensive than purchasing single-use products over time.
Once you’re done cleaning, don’t forget to kick back and breathe in the fresh spring air, sans chemicals and waste!
