Fall Decorations

Welcome to another Trash Talk Tuesday! This week I wanted to talk about some less waste fall/thanksgiving decoration ideas. Next week we will talk about some tips and tricks for ways to cook less waste this holiday season.

Around this time of year the trees turn beautiful colors of yellow, red and orange. As long as they are not wet, leaves can be preserved and used as decor. A few preservation methods include pressing, laminating, wax paper ironing or mod podgeing the leaves. You can even put the leaves between clear plastic and a cloth to enjoy for a couple of days. Acorns, pine cones, gourds, pumpkins and other foliage can be used as decor. Once the season is completed, they can be put in the compost. Functional foods like certain squash and apples are very festive as well. Minimizing the amount of plastic items purchased reduces waste. Purchasing or making items made from fabric can be used annually, which reduces waste going into the landfills. To help personalize a space you can make your own washable stuffed pumpkins, turkeys, gourds, acorns and more. Wooden wreaths can be found at most craft stores and many of the items mentioned above could be added to it. This can add a homey and festive feel to any entrance.
